French Accent Landscaping Creates Oasis in High Desert and Much More

Chris Martelly is the master of complete landscaping design and an expert at finding the balance of blending tropical dreams and wants with the the realities of stringent HOA regulations. That's what he did when he began the expansion of our backyard in North Scottsdale.

We love our mountain views and the surrounding desert which includes 20+ saguaros on our property. When it came to expanding our backyard, we wanted to boost the "lush factor" including small palms, loads of flowers and a grassy area for our 11 year old boy and two large dogs. Chris listened and provided us with a backyard that blended the beauty of the high desert with a true pool oasis.

Chris came in at the start of Phase 2 of our yard expansion and we learned quickly, he had talents unlike others who had worked for us. He quickly re-designed, re-irrigated, replanted, planted and brought stunning lighting to our yard. Plus he consulted regularly with us and got the project done, above our expectations and on time. We now have our paradise complete and a home to hummingbirds, cactus wrens and butterflies.

In business since 1997, Chris's talents also include outdoor kitchens, full size pools, in-ground jacuzzis & spa designs, complete irrigation systems, patio pavers, artistic pavers, pots & fountains, BBQ grills, fire pits, outdoor lighting, trees and plants installation, culture stones, and flower walls.

His website is terrific with beautiful photos showcasing his talents. Contact Chris at chris@frenchaccentlandscaping.com or at 602.482.8211.

DOL & IRS to Scrutinize Misclassification of Independent Contractors

Businesses that utilize independent contractors should be ready for increased scrutiny.  $25 million was requested by the Department of Labor (DOL) to enforce wage and hour laws and pursue employers who misclassify employees as independent contractors. Another $12 million and 90 new investigators were requested by the Wage and Hour Division to expand its efforts to ensure workers are in compliance with the law.  The "Misclassification Initiative" also supports new targeted efforts to recoup unpaid payroll taxes due to misclassification through state audits of problem industries supported by federal audits.  These industries include: construction, manufacturing, restaurants and home health care.

Additionally, the initiative includes a $10.9 million pilot program that would reward the states that are the most successful or improved at detecting and prosecuting employers that fail to pay the appropriate taxes due to worker misclassification.

In addition to the DOL, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be scrutinizing independent contractor arrangements. As part of a National Research Project on employment taxes, the IRS is due to audit 6,000 randomly selected companies over the next three years. The audit will focus on, among other things, worker classification.
