Dear Friends and
Colleagues:
September was quite busy with
three Home Shows, The 19th Annual NARI Golf
tournament and College football. What a
month.
At our September NARI
meeting at BSH, we had a great turn out. Thanks
to Ric Coggins for hosting a very special
meeting -- the food was superb and the
facility is an impressive look into the future
of kitchen design.
I also thank Bill
Mundell, Director of the Arizona Registrar of
Contractors for speaking to us about the major
issues facing our industry. For those of you who
did not attend, we were informed
of the sweeps of funds ranging from
our fees we pay as contractors and even the
recovery fund. We learned our funds are being
raided.
The results have resulted in
layoffs of inspectors and longer times to
resolve complaints. As of now. it is taking over
500 days to resolve an issue with the ROC. The
state is more than likely to sweep the funds
again and leave the agency even weaker. This
could lead to an assessment on our license fees
while adding more time to the resolution of
complaints. Who loses? The consumer and the
contractor. I was asked by some of the members
what we can do about it. Well suing the state as
a group is an expensive endeavor. We would need
funds in excess of $150,000.00 to get any kind
of results. We do not have the funds. What
we all need to do is to contact our State
legislators and let them know we are strongly
opposed to this practice. And that we will
remember them at the ballot box.
I will be attending the
NARI Fall Business Meeting at the end of this
month representing our Chapter at the NARI
National meeting in Indianapolis. I would like
to hear from anyone on any issues they may want
addressed with NARI
National.

| Recruitment Efforts Wrap
Up at October 14th Chapter
Meeting
The Chapter will wrap up its
annual prospect recruitment event at the Westar
Kitchen & Bath meeting on October 14th.
Interested prospects who
submit an application for review 5 business days
prior to the meeting, are in good standing with
the ROC (if applicable) and the BBB, who meet
the Chapter's guidelines for high standards,
ethics and integrity in the remodeling industry
and who have been in business in Arizona for at
least a year are eligible for a $25 discount off
NARI National dues. This brings the cost to just
$475 for 12 months.
This is a once a year event.
You can download a NARI application at www.greaterphoenixnari.org or
send Jetta an email at Jettaatk@yahoo.com. Fax
your application five (5) business days prior to
the meeting for the Ethics Committee to conduct
a review of your application to (480) 419-1631.
Don't forget to RSVP by Friday, October 10th at
3pm.
Now is the time to get your
application in and approved. Space closes for
the 2010 print directory on October 28th,
2009.
And as a reminder, guests can
only attend two (2) NARI meetings before an
application must be submitted to the Board of
Directors.

Home Improvement Leads to Radio and
TV Careers
In the 70's and 80's Steve
Deubel, Owner of Image Home Improvement
Inc. and on air with Image Home
Improvement Live had a mobile DJ
business. His peers always thought he had the
talent to be on "real" radio and always
encouraged him to pursue his dream. But the need
to keep a roof over his head pushed him in the
direction of the remodeling industry.
In 1991, he entered into the
handyman business. He knew that a large part of
his success would be selling himself first as a
person who was credible in his
field. Business grew and with that
the requests to do larger projects. In 1998, he
made the leap to General Remodeling Contractor.
During this growth, he had thoughts of having a
home improvement show on the
radio.
In May of 2005, that dream
came true when Image Home
Improvement Live! debuted on a local
Internet broadcasting station, Achieve Radio,
here in Phoenix. In July of 2007, Deubel
made the leap to "real radio" and brought his
show to Clear Channel's Xtra Sports 910 AM. Some
critics said a home improvement show on a sports
station would never work. Instead his
program brought cutting edge home improvement
information to home & business owners.
Deubel has done many DIY TV segments on
ABC15's Sonoran Living Live & 3TV's
Home and Landscape Show which has since
lead to a locally produced
design-lifestyle TV show, Fine Wine &
Design where on every show he
proves that with the right contractor
- anything is possible!
Lesson to be learned, never give up on your
dreams and never stop marketing your trade. If
you are good....someone will notice!

Renewals
One of the great new features
of the new Chapter website under construction is
a streamlining of services that can be
accomplished on one program - Wild Apricot.
The Chapter office
appreciates your patience as we learn the ins
and outs of the program. We are in the
process of setting up the site to take your
annual renewals on line. Until January, if you
could continue to renew your memberships
with a check or credit card and forward it to
the office, and disregard the test messages
coming from the site, we would greatly
appreciate it. Thank you for your patience.

NARI National Dues
Increase
At its March 28, 2009
meeting, the NARI House of Delegates voted to
impose a dues increase of $35 for Chapter
members and Members-at-large as well as a 15%
dues increase for National Members. This dues
increase will be effective for all current
members with renewal dates on or after January
1, 2010 as well as for all new members who join
the organization on or after January 1, 2010.
This is the first NARI National dues increase in
12 years.
